2010 SEMINARS

 

You will notice that the Seminars schedules and topics are no longer included on the festival registration sheet.  This was done to free up more space on the sheet itself, we will still continue to offer our educational seminars during the festival.

 

Information and schedules for our 2010 Seminars will be available soon, as always the festival Seminars are included with your registration fee for the 2010 Yuma Birding & Nature Festival.

 

Seminars are available to all registered participants at no additional charge.  Please register for those you would like to attend as space is limited and will be reserved on a first-come, first-served basis

Below is a list of the current available seminars for our 2009 festival.  I am still waiting for some descriptions from festival leaders and as soon as they are available I will list them here.  Just as a reminder all of the 2009 Yuma Birding & Nature Festival Seminars are included with the registration fee.

Historic Yuma Slideshow and Heritage Presentation - Tina Clark
Join Tina Clark, Historian, City Archaeologist, and Grant Writer for the City of Yuma Tasked to the Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area as she takes you through a photographic history of Yuma.

Introduction to El Golfo - D. Sussman
Dave Sussman has almost 40 years of experience visiting and exploring the El Golfo de Santa Clara area of Mexico, located at the north end of the Gulf of California about 100 miles south of Yuma. He will give an overview of the geology, paleontology, and flora and fauna (including avian) of the area.

Newcomer's Perspective of What Yuma Has to Offer - Lisa Miller
Learn about the exciting and beautiful things the Yuma area has to offer through the eyes of a newcomer to the area.  Lisa Miller will show you what she saw as she explored the beautiful desert.

Recreation Opportunities in the Yuma Area - Joe Raffaele

Fred Wong will introduce you to the wonderful hobby of bird watching by providing insights into bird behavior, identification, and habitat.

Landscaping for Wildlife - Fred Wong

Rare and Unusual Plants in the Yuma Area - Karen Reichhardt
Come and take a virtual walk with BLM Botanist Karen Reichhardt to learn about the infinite varieties of flora that grow in the desert and how they flourish in their harsh environment.

Mountain Lion Ecology - L. Smythe
Join Lyndsay Smythe from the United States Fish & Wildlife Service for this presentation on the habitat and ecology of Mountain Lions in Arizona.

Lifestyles of the Not-so-Famous - Pinau Merlin
Join us for a fun peek into the lives and natural history of those less well known, but no less fascinating desert critters, such as ringtail cats, roadrunners, jackrabbits, Gila monsters, turkey vultures, snakes, and Sonoran Desert toads among others.
 
Birding Photography - Dave Sussman
Dave Sussman is an amateur photographer who has been trying with varying success to take bird photos for the last 2 years. He will discuss the various pitfalls he has encountered and the lessons he has learned (from experts and by doing), with examples of his mistakes and progress.

The Phenomenon of Bird Migration - Fred Wong
Join Fred Wong for a fascinating look into how and why birds migrate and why the Yuma valley is an important part of their journey.
 
 Elder Village at Sunrise Point
Located adjacent to the Colorado River and near the Ocean to Ocean Highway Bridge, the Elder Village will be an area that will display a replica of Quechan traditional homes (pre and post 1900s) and a ramada.  Join Allyson Collins from the Quechan Economic Development Administration for a presentation on this historic and educational development along the Colorado River.
 
Birding Photography - Henry Detwiler
Join local birding expert Henry Detwiler for his tips on Birding photography.

Sonoran Desert's Tropical Connections - Jim Rorabaugh
Join Jim Rorabaugh for a seminar detailing how the origins of the Sonoran Desert’s flora and fauna lie primarily to the south in the Thornscrub and Tropical Deciduous Forests of northwestern Mexico.

Wild Horses and Burros – Roger Oyler
